Take a look at these photos of Sumatran elephants living free in the wild. Your generosity keeps our teams on the ground, working every day to keep elephants safe, and their forest homes thriving.
Elephant Patrol Teams spotted a wild elephant herd as they moved together toward a dense forest area in Seumanah Jaya, Aceh Timur.
Thanks to your support, these vital patrol efforts are growing, with the launch of a third elephant patrol team in East Aceh. This means there are now 12 dedicated rangers, across three teams, protecting elephant habitat, removing threats, and stopping illegal activity before it destroys lives and forests.
And they work incredibly hard! To show you just how dedicated they are, from July-September last year they:
- Completed nine patrol missions
- Covered 2,727 kilometres
- And spent 191 days in the field
That’s an amazing effort, and it’s all thanks to your kind, dedicated support!
This photo below shows our team encountering a wild elephant in the forest, while out on patrol. Seeing these beautiful animals thriving in the wild is proof that your support is making a difference!
And the good news keeps on coming, because you’re also helping to monitor wild elephants in the forest, and end human-elephant conflict. Recently, your support meant that two wild elephants were fitted with GPS collars. This is a major step forward in protecting entire herds across the Leuser Ecosystem, so thank you!
One of these elephants is a beautiful young male, estimated to be 14–15 years old. He lives in East Aceh and has been named Gajah Manah. Thanks to you, we can now track his movements, watch over his herd, and respond quickly if danger appears.
Knowing where elephants are in the forest allows us to warn nearby villages if elephants move close to farmland, helping prevent conflict before it starts, and keeping both people and elephants safe.
