Because across Sumatra, forests are being cleared for farming, mining, and expanding towns. As wild spaces shrink, elephants are pushed closer together, and closer to people. Injuries, conflict, and death follow.
With fewer than 1,000 Sumatran elephants left in the wild, there is no room to lose a single one. Every life matters.

Meet the elephant you helped save
The call came in from North Sumatra. A wild male elephant had been spotted in serious distress. Limping, with his left hind leg badly swollen.
Because of you, the Wildlife Ambulance moved fast.
When they reached the elephant, they safely sedated him to assess and treat his wounds. What they found during the examination was grim.

Stab wounds marked the base of his tail, his left hind quarter, and the pad of his left hind foot. The shape and depth of the injuries pointed almost certainly to a confrontation with a larger, tusked male.
His wounds were serious. The gash on his foot was roughly 12 centimetres long, 20 centimetres deep, and severely infected. The team cleaned the wound, applied local antiseptic and gave him antibiotics.

For this elephant, help arrived just in time. Without the Wildlife Ambulance, and without you, the outcome would likely have been very different.
